In honor of National Poetry Month, April 2019
I entered this fight with your heart as the prize
Accompanied by your smile and beautiful brown eyes
For your affection and passion, I would gladly fight this war
So I suited up for battle and ran out the front door
Bullets were flying, and sometimes I got hit
But you would revive me with your first aid kit
It was filled with reassurance, kisses, and hugs
When I was hurt real bad, you stitch me up with love
Being compared to rivals and partners of the past,
was a huge obstacle I had to surpass
One of them, in your eyes, could do no wrong
I had to prove myself worthy, or I would be gone
In this fight, I had victories, some days, I got battered
Because I was not handed the playbook on a platter
Face-to-face I had to figure it all out
Trying to earn your respect and remove your doubts
No free pass for me to get to your heart
I had to fight uphill right from the start
Excited and anxious every step of the way
Because your heart was my goal to reach one-day
